This was a very average book. The story seemed intriguing when I first picked it up and I did not have any particular problem with it. It was just.. plain.An interior designer and a soccer player locked together for a home renovation project. It was nice and simple. They met in a weird way, they started working together, caught feelings, a bit of drama and a less than cathartic ending.We did not see enough of the lives of the characters before they met, though most of their problems came from then. It just made the whole story up in the air without any grounding.One notion bothered me, and it was that Michael, the soccer player was pressured by Luke to come out. Like what? That's a big no. Even if the reason for not coming out is silly it has to be respected.And why would someone call a guy 4 years youndger than them a 'kid'?So yeah a lot of stuff bothered me, but I still kept reading for some reason. Probably because of the side characters. The first half or so of this book definitely didn't work. The rest of it evened out a little more but I was just not feelin' it. Luke's character was neurotic and whiney, with a side dose of verbal diarrhea. Michael was bipolar in his attitudes, his moods swinging harder than a hooker's hips. The scenes felt terrifically disjointed and the MC's actions were illogical and grating. As the book went on, it did even out a little with Luke and Michael having more settled interactions, mostly shown in sex scenes. I never got a solid sense of their emotional connection. I am also not a fan of 1st person POV since Michael spent way too much time in his own head dwelling on his own insecurities. There was not enough depth to Michael's character. And the scenes at the end intensified the disconnect since Michael never really communicated anything to Luke. Secondary characters were minimally shown. Luke's mother was modeled on Auntie Mame, I think, his friend a well meaning diva queen and Tonio an older Latino stereotype. Trevor and Alex, who are in sequels made brief cameos. I'm disappointed since the " Better Than..." books were much better overall.
