Ebook About A New York Times Best Seller! From the pages of Newbery Medal winner Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN comes fan-favorite character Death collecting her solo adventures! The first story introduces the young, pale, perky, and genuinely likable Death. One day in every century, Death walks the Earth to better understand those to whom she will be the final visitor. Today is that day. As a young mortal girl named Didi, Death befriends a teenager and helps a 250-year old homeless woman find her missing heart. What follows is a sincere musing on love, life and (of course) death. In the second story, a rising star of the music world wrestles with revealing her true sexual orientation just as her lover is lured into the realm of Death that Death herself should make an appearance. A practical, honest, and intelligent story that illuminates "the miracle of death." Collects the DEATH: THE HIGH COST OF LIVING and DEATH: THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE miniseries, a must have for any fan.Book Death: The Deluxe Edition (Death: The High Cost of Living) Review :
This review will focus on the edition of the book itself rather than the work of Neil Gaiman (who writes every story collected here), Chris Bachalo (who illustrates the main Death mini-series) and the plethora of talented artists, some of them real masters, that illustrate the rest of this book. You can find many great reviews about the stories included in this volume right here in Amazon, checking these links: Death: The High Cost of Living , Death: The Time of Your Life A LIST OF ALL THE MATERIAL COLLECTED IN THIS BOOK:* * * The following issues are all collected in its entirety * * *- The Sandman #8 (Art by Mike Dringenberg and Malcom Jones III) and #20 (art by Colleen Doran and Jones III). These are the new re-colored versions. Issue #8 is the first appearance of Death in the Sandman series.- Death: The High Cost Of Living #1 to 3 (Art by Chris Bachalo and Mark Buckingham). This is the first Death mini-series, one of the main features of this volume.- Death: The Time Of Your Life #1 to 3 (Art by Chris Bachalo, Mark Buckingham and Mark Pennington). Also included are aditional illustrations featuring Death from The Sandman: A Gallery Of Dreams and The Endless Gallery, adding up to a total of 49 illustration.* * * The following are complete short stories extracted from larger anthologies * * *- Vertigo: Winter's Edge #2. A 7-pages educational piece about AIDS prevention, with art by Dave McKean.ABOUT THE EDITION:This is a very handsome, high quality book and an excellent alternative to the much more expensive Absolute Death edition if you have a budget to keep but want something better than average TPBs.- The paper stock of this volume is glossy and heavy weight, and the printing quality is excellent.- The book features a fully printed hardback under the dustjacket (unlike most of DC/Vertigo HCs that sport an awfully cheap black cardboard presentation).- It's a solid glued-binding volume. Of course a sewn one would have been better, but given that this isn't a huge Omnibus edition there's very little gutter loss, so it's fine. The page count of Death: The Deluxe Edition is of exactly 320 pages. It packs a lot of material and you get great stories and wonderful illustrations. Also included is a 2 page introduction by Tori Amos, originally published in 1994 and 3 pages worth of biographies of the main artists of the book. Unfortunately, I don't own the Absolute Death edition, so besides the presentation and the massive size of that volume, I can't tell if there are any differences content wise between the 2 editions.CONCLUSION:I'm really happy with this book, I think it's a great value. It looks like DC/Vertigo is definitely improving the standard of quality of their Deluxe line. Now all that I wish is that they eventually release the complete Sandman series in this same Deluxe HC format. This is a beautiful and affordable paperback edition containing I believe everything that is in the more expensive hardcover edition. It has Death: the high cost of living and Death: the time of your life along with the several sandman issues that the character Death appears in. Also includes the art gallery of the art of Death.Neil Gaiman is truly fascinating and shows through a mythological fictional character how you can appreciate life by understanding Death. You get a lifetime.
